Asakusa’s Kagetsudo’s Melon Pan

Kagetsudo’s Store Front
Kagetsudo | 花月堂 offers a very interesting food item that I saw featured in one of the blogs of much tries here in Tokyo, specifically near where I am staying. So when I was roaming around Kaminarimon, I chanced upon this shop and thought I should probably give it shop a try.

They specialize in Melon Pans – or more known as Anpan in Japan. It is a very interesting bread as it is crunchy in the outside and soft in the inside.

I arrived around 0855H and they open at 0900H, so I just waited and became their first customer. I also thought to just try one anpan, so I decided to eat it in the shop. I took a shot of the anpan before taking a bite.

The Melon Pan

One very interesting appearance of the melon pan is that it looks really crunchy from the way it was prepared. And taking my first bite really proves this.

My first melon pan bite

The melon pan is crunchy on the outside yet remains soft inside. It also has a very subtle flavor – milky with a hint of sweetness. Unlike other breads I have tried, this is interestingly not sweet for me. Yet, you will be able to enjoy each bite and savor the natural texture and harmony of this bread.

This melon pan is definitely a must try when you are around Asakusa, and I give it a five out of five.
